FAQ’s

What is Pioneer Pediatrics?

Pioneer Pediatrics is a concierge medical practice that charges a low monthly fee and in return you get direct access to your child’s Pediatrician, Dr. Justin Lay (directly to my cell phone), extended visit times, free telemedicine, access to house calls and a host of other benefits.

Why do I need a membership at Pioneer Pediatrics?
The membership fee allows us to keep the number of patients at Pioneer Pediatrics at an extremely low level so your children can receive the time and attention that they deserve. It allows us to offer extended visit times and to perform house calls as well. The extended visit times allow us to focus on healthy lifestyle habits for your children and gives us ample time to discuss behavior, nutrition, mental health, growth and development.
What are my membership options?

We have 2 membership plans: The first is an all inclusive plan in which the monthly fee covers all in clinic visits, in clinic labs, in clinic procedures and in clinic medications. The second plan is the Pay as you Go plan in which you pay a lower monthly fee and pay $99 when your child needs to be seen in the office. This fee will also include in clinic labs, in clinic procedures and in clinic medications. The Pay as you Go plan also includes 1 wellness visit per year which will cover all wellness needs for children >2 years old. Both membership options give you direct access to me via phone/text and email, free telemedicine, longer patient visits, discounted costs on home visits and external labs.

How will this save me money?

No copays, no deductibles, no hidden fees or surprise bills following your appointment. You’ll be able to avoid many in person visits altogether by sending your questions directly to us via email and text. Not to mention that many illnesses can be treated with telemedicine keeping you from missing work and saving you an in person clinic visit. Also, spending more time with you during wellness visits typically leads
to a decreased number of sick visits in the future.

Can I contact my physician after hours?

Absolutely! Direct physician access is one of the greatest benefits of Pioneer Pediatrics. Because illness and injury do not respect regular office hours, you may call, text, or email me whenever you need. I will start responding to texts by 7:00 a.m. and will respond through 7:00 p.m. on Monday-Friday. If you are up with your child during the night, feel free to text me and I will respond as soon as I can on the following morning. I will also be available via phone/text/email from 7:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. on Saturdays to further meet your needs.

What if I need medical attention while I’m away from home?

Imagine the peace of mind you will have to know that your Pediatrician is available while you travel the country or the world. This sort of care is considered routine at Pioneer Pediatrics. Because you’ll have the ability to contact me directly, I am available no matter where you are. Many illnesses can be diagnosed and treated with a simple conversation and could potentially keep you out of an ER in an unfamiliar town.

Is the membership fee eligible for HSA or FSA reimbursement?

The short answer is potentially. You will need to check with your accountant or HR department regarding the use of Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) as possible payment options for your membership. Even if you are unable to use these funds to pay for the membership fee directly, there is a good chance that you can still use your HSA/FSA to cover things such as your visit costs with the pay as you go plan.

Do you accept insurance?

No, and that is likely the biggest benefit in our model of medicine. Pioneer Pediatrics centers on a direct, personal relationship between you and your doctor. There are no barriers between you and your Pediatrician. An example that I frequently give people is that you might use your auto insurance for major damages after a car accident. However, you’d never use it to get an oil change or to pay for gas. Health insurance is currently being used for the equivalent of oil changes for humans – routine physicals, simple sick visits, simple blood tests, and minor procedures. This just doesn’t make
sense.

You can still use your insurance for required imaging, to see specialists and any hospitalizations that might occur but you will not need health insurance to receive care at Pioneer Pediatrics.

I don't have insurance - can I still join?

Yes, we will take care of your children regardless of your health insurance
situation.

However, we recommend that our patients continue a major medical plan
with a high-deductible and health savings account to cover major health issues. High-deductible plans should keep your monthly premiums lower as you will not need a health insurance plan to pay for Pioneer Pediatrics.
